Meet Flip Hattingh

Flip Hattingh is a South African artist that prodominantly works with woven paper as medium.

"OF REGRET" is a meticulously crafted paper-woven moth by Flip, currently on display at our Ghorbany Benmore antique retail gallery. The piece draws profound inspiration from the iconic movie poster for The Silence of the Lambs, which famously features a death's-head hawkmoth (Acherontia atropos). In a nod to the original imagery—where the skull pattern on the moth's back is actually composed of seven naked human bodies—this artwork explores themes of vulnerability and remorse. The intricate sculpture is masterfully constructed using Milano Craft paper, a material traditionally used for pattern-making in the fashion industry, interwoven with fragile, stained packaging tissue.
